Essentials of Operating a Shop

The Essentials of Operating a Shop Course by My Shop Assist (MSA)

So you’ve become a proficient tuner and have intimate knowledge of all the tuning platforms you work with. You either have your own shop or have aspirations of opening one. To become a successful business owner, you need to know how to run the business. But this is easier said than done. This class will answer many of the important questions you have along with ones you haven’t even thought of yet.

Most shop owners begin their career as technicians, not business owners.  Often, you start out working for someone else, in their shop, and watch how they run their business. Ultimately, you decide that you can do it better on your own but do not know what it really takes to manage your own shop.  Operating your own business can be quite intimidating, so this class is intended to help prepare you for what you need to know and how to work through it.  We will give you the tips and tools needed to make your new dream shop highly profitable in the shortest amount of time.

What is the class about?

The Essentials of Operating a Shop course is a 1 day, 9-hour course that will provide you with the concepts and procedures you need to become a successful shop owner.

Running a business is hard. It’s not just tuning a bunch of cars, milling dozens of parts in a machine, or installing lift kits.  There are hundreds of business-related decisions that must be made every day to ensure your success and without the proper training and guidance, making the wrong decisions can be extremely costly.

After attending the Essentials of Operating a Shop course, you will have the answers to questions like,

  • When is the best time to hire employees?
  • How do I manage the employees I already have?
  • What is the best way to provide excellent customer service without spending all      day doing it?
  • Should I sell parts online? What’s the best way to do it?
  • How much inventory should I keep?
  • When is the right time to invest in shop equipment such as a Dyno, CNC machine,      or alignment rack?
  • How do I minimize overhead expenses?
  • What are some common best practices for accounting?
  • What are the best marketing strategies to get name recognition?
  • …and many more.

Come prepared to learn how to work ON your business instead of IN your business.

Who Should Attend?

This class is designed for current owners or shop managers but it is also perfect for that technician who is interested in opening their own shop. It doesn’t matter if you’re an established shop looking to improve your business operations or brand new (maybe not even open yet). You will benefit from Essentials of Operating a Shop.

This class isn’t specific to any particular type of automotive business, either! The training provided can be applied to any automotive-based business such as performance shops, fabrication businesses, transmission shops, specialty machine shops, 4×4 shops, powder coaters, and many more.

Online – Intro to EFI - You’ll learn the different types of systems available, what components are needed and how each one works, and you’ll find out how injection and ignition systems operate and how to set them up properly. This is the perfect place to start for anyone looking to enter the world of high performance engine calibration and tuning!

Advanced EFI Tuning Concepts - This course is aimed at the EFI tuner who already knows the basics but wants a deeper understanding of how things actually happen inside their ECU. You’ll uncover the math and science behind “why” things happen the way they do. To do this, we’ll explore each step the ECU goes through to calculate how long to pulse an injector to achieve the perfect quantity of fuel.

Hands On - EFI 101 - This 1 & 1/2 day class is very well suited to anyone who is interested in learning about electronic fuel injection from the ground up. The class will give you all the information and basic skills to start on your way to building and safely tuning your own EFI systems.

Advanced Dyno Tuning Workshop (DTW) - Students who have completed the EFI-101 or both online classes are eligible to enroll in this 1 day class to experience one-on- one coaching while tuning a vehicle in real time on the dyno. This is the practical, hands-on application of knowledge gained from 101 or online.

Advanced Turbo Concepts (ATC) – Is a Data Driven approach to Turbocharging. This one day class will teach you to collect and interpret engine data as it relates to turbocharging. How to predict how much “boost” and engine will need and why it’s less important than other parameters.

Engine Blueprinting Course (EBC) - This course consists of 3 days and teaches a start to finish process in advanced level engine building! This course is a hands-on, instructor-led journey through the maze of items to be checked, measured and inspected during the assembly process.

Accelerated Certification Program (ACP) - This course is an intensive 5-Day course that includes much deeper explanations and advanced subject matter over the 101 and Advanced DTW classes PLUS substantial hands-on dyno sessions to practice the theories and concepts learned. You will leave “Certified” with the knowledge and confidence to tune any vehicle or ECU. Our Highest Level, Most Comprehensive Course!

Interested in learning to tune performance engines? High Performance Academy offers you the easiest solution to learn both the theoretical and practical aspects of performance EFI Tuning. The EFI tuning industry is unusual in that there is no formal qualification path you can take through traditional means such as university of a polytechnic to become a recognised and qualified EFI tuner. Historically this has made it tough if you’re interested in becoming an EFI tuner, or even if you want to improve your existing tuning skills. It’s also created an industry which is shrouded in secrecy and misinformation.

High quality tuning education at your place, at your own pace.
You have the ability to learn from the comfort of your own home. We offer a range of online courses that you can take at your own pace, and in your own place. Our lives are becoming increasingly busy and online training allows you to expand your knowledge when and where it suits you. All our courses are presented via high quality video modules that you can watch anywhere in the world with an internet connection. Once you’ve purchased a course, they’re yours for life and you can re-watch them as many times as you like - This creates a perfect resource for you to go back to time and time again.

For you to become a confident and proficient tuner you’re going to need to build your skills in three separate areas:
1. The theory of EFI Tuning - How the EFI system functions and what you’re trying to achieve by adjusting fuel and ignition.
2. How to make tuning changes - The practical application of the EFI tuning theory on the dyno or on the road.
3. Real world tuning experience - Actual hands-on time tuning engines on a dyno or on the road.

HPA provide you with education in these three key areas. Our theory courses teach you how the engine operates, how the EFI system functions and how the engine is affected by changes to fuel and ignition so you understand what you’re trying to achieve. Once you understand the theory, our practical tuning courses will teach you how to apply this knowledge and tune an engine from start to finish using a simple and easy to follow step by step approach. Lastly we offer an industry first ‘Remote Practice Dyno’ where you can connect via the internet and tune a real engine on a real engine dyno without leaving the house and without risking your own engine - This is perfect for building your confidence.

Once you get started tuning, you’re still going to have questions and this is where HPA’s online community comes in. Our private forum is the perfect place to get fast and accurate answers to your specific tuning questions. You can also expand your knowledge with our regular weekly live tuning webinars where we focus on a specific aspect of EFI tuning. You can watch live and ask questions during the webinar, or if you miss the love lesson, you can watch the replay in our archive along with over 100 hours of existing webinar content.

We know that buying online education can be tricky - What if the course is way to complex and you don’t understand it? Or maybe you already know all of the topics covered? We understand and we want you to be able to choose with confidence. This is why we offer a 60 day no questions asked money back guarantee. If for any reason you don’t think the course is right for you, we will give you a full refund.
